How to Report a Lost or Found Animal To report a lost or found animal call us at (763) 489-2204 for our Golden Valley location or (763) 862-4030 in Coon Rapids Please be prepared to provide the following information when reporting a lost or found pet:
If you have lost an animal... Contact your local animal control and area humane societies (including the Animal Humane Society) right away to inform them of your lost animal. State law requires all impound facilities to hold stray animals for a minimum period of five days to give an owner the opportunity to locate their pet. Because each agency maintains its own list of animals, be sure to contact ALL animal impound facilities and animal shelters in the area where your pet was lost. Check your neighborhood thoroughly. Talk to your neighbors and post notices throughout the neighborhood. Place an ad in your local newspaper's Lost and Found section and check the found ads daily. Visit your local animal control and humane societies at lease once every five days to view the strays in the impound areas. (No reporting system is perfect as owner and finder descriptions can vary. The only way to know for sure if a facility has your pet is to visit in person.) If you have found a stray animal... Check immediately for the presence of an identification tag, rabies tag, or license tag. If the animal has no visible identification, be aware that it may have an identifying microchip implant and/or a tattoo that is not readily visible. To have a pet checked for a microchip implant, please bring the animal to the Society or to a veterinary clinic equipped with a microchip scanner. The microchip, if present, can be identified and the owner contacted. Please remember that an owner looking for a lost pet will most likely be unaware that you are holding their animal. Most pet owners will, however, contact their local animal control agencies and animal shelters. In order to make the system work best, all found, stray animals should be brought to a local impound facility or animal shelter to facilitate its return to its owner. If the animal is injured or unapproachable, do not attempt to capture it. Call your local animal control or police department to come and pick up the animal. About Our Lost and Found Service… The Animal Humane Society offers a computerized lost and found retrieval system. This free service allows the Society to accept reports of both lost and found animals and easily search for a possible match on several separate parameters. The Society does not keep data on animals that have been impounded at other agencies, shelters or animal control facilities.
