Yappy Hour Schedule Changes

Yappy Hour on May 23rd has been re-scheduled to May 30.

This will be the last Yappy Hour of the season. The Yappy Hour scheduled for June 6th has been cancelled and we won't be having Yappy Hour over the summer due to low attendance during summer months. Yappy Hours will resume in the fall.

Thank you to everyone who has attended Yappy Hour this winter. We had fun playing and look forward to seeing you and you dogs again this fall. Have a safe and happy summer!

About Our Classes

Our Flexible Schedule Program
Looking for a training class for your pet that is flexible, pet-oriented, family-friendly, and can meet the needs of your busy schedule? The Animal Humane Society has developed an innovative new class format that is designed to help you fit pet training into your life, instead of the other way around! Our new format is a progressive, go-at-your own pace Levels Program.

Our new format allows students to purchase a 2- or 4- month Training Pass that pays for a block of time in which to train your pet in weekly classes. All students will begin with our informative Intro to Pet Training session. The Intro to Pet Training is free to prospective students and is the first required class of our program. If you aren’t sure about whether this is the program for you, come check us out and see what you think with no obligation.

Which class is for me?
Puppies aged 2 to 6 months start with Puppy Kindergarten, puppies 6 months and older and adult dogs start in Level 1. We also offer the AKC Canine Good Citizen test monthly , Therapy Dog classes, Wallflower Classes for shy/fearful dogs and Tricks and Games classes

What is a level?
Each Level is a module with specific skills that will be mastered before the student moves up. Each level is designed to take 2 to 4 weeks. Students may progress at their own pace without feeling rushed.

Benefits of our Levels Classes over Traditional Class Format:

  • Start classes on your schedule.
  • Our free Intro to Pet Dog Training gives you a chance to come see if our program meets your needs. This is the required first class for our program, and is free to prospective students.
  • Work at your own speed! Take the time you need to learn what your dog needs to know. Handlers with previous positive reinforcement training experience can move more quickly through the curriculum. First-time pet owners won’t feel rushed.
  • We’re flexible! Students can miss a week without worrying about falling behind.
  • Students can float to a class if they have a schedule conflict that week.
  • All the dogs in each level are working on the same skills, and you’ll know what you need to master before moving up.
  • Move at your own pace as you master the skills.
  • Discount on our playgroups

Who Can Train?
Our classes are designed to be family friendly. All members of the household are welcome to train together.

Our Methods

  • All our classes use dog-friendly training methods that all members of the family can do. We use a combination of lure/reward and clicker training.
  • We want you to know the correct way to use food in training, so you and your dog do not become dependent on “treats”, but can also use Life Rewards when you have the behaviors well-established.
  • We encourage but do not require use of Gentle Leader™
  • 2- Month Training Pass           $150.00 ($75.00/month)
    4-Month Training Pass            $250.00 ($62.50/month)

Private Training and Behavior Lessons
   Private in-home lessons cost $90./hour
Private lessons at the shelter cost $75./hour

   3-lesson package available, which includes:

  • Three in-home lessons for $250.
  • Gentle Leader™ Headcollar System ($25.00 value)
  • Professional training and behavior staff works with both canine and feline behavior issues.

Why take classes at the Animal Humane Society Training School?

  • Your class fees support homeless animals and programs of the Animal Humane Society · Your classes will be taught by experienced, knowledgeable trainers who love dogs and enjoy working with people.
  • Our Training School is one of the few that encourages full participation by all family members, including your children.
  • Our program teaches Real Life Skills you can use with your pet, rather than stylized obedience drills and “green mat skills”.
  • Our Animal Training and Behavior Department has additional written materials and help for behavior problems for dogs, cats, or other pets
